**About the Role**
We have the opportunity available to join the National Public Health Service (NPHS) Intelligence Directorate as a Senior Analyst Surveillance for the Northern region. This is a permanent, full-time role.
You'll be part of a collaborative team working to provide timely, robust surveillance and intelligence that supports public health decision-making across the Northern Region and nationally. This role contributes directly to operational readiness, outbreak response, and Northen region public health planning by turning complex data into clear, actionable insights.
As a Senior Analyst, you will:
- Lead specific surveillance workstreams under the guidance of the Principal Analyst, including data analysis, interpretation, and reporting
- Provide high-quality, relevant public health intelligence to regional stakeholders
- Contribute to the development and improvement of our surveillance systems, processes, and tools
- Work collaboratively to enhance the visibility, relevance, and impact of surveillance insights across the public health system
**About the Team/Service/ Location**
The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
The NPHS Regional surveillance team is a key part of this system, providing intelligence that supports both regionally tailored responses and national public health strategies. You'll be working closely with internal colleagues and public health partners across the motu but with a specific focus on supporting and enabling the Northern region.
**About you**
- A relevant graduate or post-graduate qualification in epidemiology, public health, data science, statistics, or related field
- At least 3-5 years' experience in surveillance, public health, or applied analytics
- Demonstrated skill in using quantitative (and ideally qualitative) analysis methods to generate meaningful intelligence products
- Experience or interest in public health surveillance, outbreak response, and population health planning
- Ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders to understand needs and tailor outputs
- Proficiency in at least one analysis or data visualisation tool (e.g., R, SQL, Python, Power BI)
- An interest in contributing to system improvement and helping build a high-performing regional intelligence function
- Experience in (or a willingness to learn) implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action
- Well-developed communication skills and the ability to write clearly, accurately, and with purpose for both technical and non-technical audiences
