**Mō te tūranga | About the role**
Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has experience in the backcountry, and enjoys protecting threatened species? If yes, then this is the job for you
- We have an exciting opportunity for a Ranger based in North Canterbury, out of the Rangiora district office. Your role with involve undertaking tasks associated with the Kākāriki Karaka/ Orange-fronted parakeet recovery programme.
- The work roster is frequently 9 days on, 5 days off operation. You will need to able to stay away from home in the backcountry overnight when working. This role is a permanent seasonal role, working 40 hours per week from October to June and taking unpaid leave from July to September.
- Reasonable technical knowledge and a high level of physical fitness would be beneficial to ensure a high quality of work is being done safely and to a high standard.
Your responsibilities will include:
- checking predator traps and bait stations
- monitoring predator numbers
- maintaining traps and trap lines
- assisting with kākāriki translocations, monitoring and facilities maintenance.
**Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience**
We are looking for a team player, who is not afraid of hard work. If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- previous experience with trapping and pest/predator control
- backcountry experience and a high level of fitness
- ability to work well in a small team, and at times unsupervised
- have excellent communication skills
- a high level of attention to detail
- tech savvy/experience using field-based technology
- able to be flexible with work hours (i.e. sometimes the roster may need to be adjusted, or days may be longer dependent on the workload)
- capacity and the personal circumstances to allow overnight stays on a regular basis is a must for the successful applicant
- full New Zealand Drivers' License
**Mō te tīma | About the team**
The successful applicant will join the Kākāriki Karaka Operations Team. This consists of the Manukura, Kākāriki Karaka (Operations Manager), Senior Ranger, Supervisor, and nine rangers based out of the Rangiora Office in North Canterbury. The focus of this team is to manage and implement the Kākāriki Karaka recovery programme. The purpose of these roles is to undertake landscape scale control of predators in kākāriki habitat with the Hawdon Valley and Hurunui South Branch. Other rangers in the team focus on finding and protecting nests and monitoring the outcomes.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
