At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga | learners and whānau | families.
We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

- Taking practical action to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi.
- Giving priority to regional and local voice.
- Delivering greater responsiveness, accessibility and integrated services and support.

About our group and team
Learning Support is a critical part of Te Mahau in Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education.
We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.
Our Learning Support practitioners work closely with families | whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
As an Advisor on Deaf Children, you will play a critical role in our region's Learning Support team by:
- Providing high quality learning support in accordance with the Ministry's practice framework, He Pikorua, to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
- Strengthening the capability of the adults around the babies and children who are best placed to support their learning.
- Providing professional support and guidance to families, schools and teachers, building and strengthening the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children.
- Understanding the families' needs, collaboratively planning, supporting and monitoring the implementation of intervention plans.
- Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child's needs are complex.
Mōhou ake | About you
**To be successful you will need**:
- A Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children.
Please note, if you do not have either of these qualifications but you have a teacher of the deaf or speech language therapist or equivalent qualification with at least two years' experience in that role, we can consider you, but you will be required to complete the Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) within four years after appointment.
- Experience and knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings.
- A full driver licence.
**Please note**:
