Gain practical field experience in environmental monitoring
- Learn and grow with exposure to a range of research areas
- Paid, fixed term 12-week summer job
**He angitūtanga: The opportunity**
We have a great opportunity for students with an interest in hydrology and environmental monitoring to join our Hydrology team for a 12-week period over the summer (from November 2024).
Based in the Auckland City Centre, but working across the Auckland region, you’ll be working for 40 hours per week on field and office-based tasks. You will spend most of your week in the field (3-4 days) supporting the delivery of hydrology monitoring programmes collecting data on rainfall, river water level/flow, lake water level, groundwater level, and continuous water quality. The work involves hands-on use of a wide range of monitoring equipment, tools, and electronics. Office-based tasks such as organising equipment maintenance and assisting with data management will also be key components of your work.
During the placement there will also be the opportunity to see how other environmental programmes undertaken by the Water Quality team and the Air, Land and Biodiversity team are conducted.
**He kōrero mōu: About you**
You have a collaborative approach but are able to undertake tasks independently and proactively where required. You have a passion for the outdoors and are comfortable working outside in all weather conditions, sometimes for long days, with an excellent attitude towards health and safety.
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must:
- be enrolled in a degree for environmental/biological/natural science or similar. Preference will be given to students completing their BSc and intending to progress to a PGDipSci, BSc (Hons) or MSc.
- hold a clean, full New Zealand driver’s license and be prepared to drive utes.
A current first aid certificate, day skippers and/or water safety qualification would be beneficial, but are not essential.
**Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer**
This role offers you a brilliant summer job that is related to your degree and will give you valuable work experience to help propel your career in the future. You’ll have the opportunity to work across different environmental specialisations in the Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit and gain first-hand experience of environmental monitoring and research.
- Cover letter;
- CV showing any relevant experience;
- Your academic transcript, showing courses completed and grades achieved (this could be an official or unofficial academic transcript);
- An outline of your research interests and career aspirations (up to 1000 characters).
See the position description for more information. Please note that the formal job title is Monitoring & Research Student.
This role is deemed safety sensitive and in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. A full driver's license is a requirement.
**Applications close on Sunday 25 August 2024**
