The Ministry for Primary Industries are currently recruiting for a Lead Engagement Adviser to join our Māori Partnerships team which forms part of our wider Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service business unit based in Wellington.

Te Uru Rākau recognises the importance of keeping connected, of maintaining relationships and dialogue so that we can keep moving forward together.
As Lead Engagement Adviser, you will be responsible for building and maintaining regional relationships and engagement with tāngata whenua and iwi to ensure te ao Māori perspectives at all levels our work. You will also contribute to the development of work programmes and provide support for Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service to contribute to Māori economic and social development through forestry.
**The key accountabilities of this position include**:
- Leading regional engagement with Māori and ensuring strong and constructive relationships are developed and maintained
- Identifying opportunities and challenges for contribution to Māori economic and social development through forestry
- Building and maintaining trusted, effective, and credible relationships with Treaty Partners, tangata whenua, and Māori forestry stakeholders
- Supporting and developing advice, programmes, and other work streams related to Maori interests in forestry
- Acting as a regional connection to related activities across MPI's integrated advisory services
- Contributing to development and implementation of strategies, policies, processes, and operations to support and enable delivery of the Ministry for Primary Industries' obligations and strategic outcomes to Māori
- Ensuring regional knowledge of Treaty settlements and partnership agreements, tikanga and other protocols to provide fit-for-purpose analysis and advice on forestry
- Supporting development of Māori-Crown partnership capability and lift engagement capability within Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service
- Building and embedding knowledge of the principles of the Treaty within Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service
Mōu - About You
To be successful in this role, you will have strong knowledge of the region you are working in, and significant experience in a cultural advisory role within a large and complex environment.
You will have expert knowledge and understanding of Te Ao Māori worldview, Tikanga Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Government obligations.
You will be an excellent relationship builder and stakeholder engagement manager, with the ability to build effective networks both internally and experience, relevant experience as a people leader in a related working environment and have knowledge of strategic and business planning processes.
Importantly, you will have proven experience in developing and providing advice to a range of audiences at all levels, strong negotiation & communication abilities, and someone with an understanding of legislation, the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi, and other statutes as they relate to natural resources.
