**About the role**

The purpose of Arms Safety and Control is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in firearms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. The purpose of arms staff is to contribute to Our Business by becoming the safest country: one in which people are safe and feel safe by ensuring the safe use, possession and control of firearms.

As an Arms Vetter you will be a valued member of the District Firearms Licensing Team and be engaged in interviewing firearms license applicants and other persons, to determine an applicant’s suitability to be issued with a New Zealand firearms license. Firearms Vetters’ generally start duty from home but have support from the District Firearms team and at local police stations. You will be required to travel in the district to visit license applicants and referees in their homes to assess the security setup of the firearm and suitability of the applicant to ensure they are reaching the required criteria.

**Key Accountabilities**
- Interviewing applicant and referees for a firearms licence.
- Inspecting firearms security in private premises.
- Inventory checks of firearms held by dealers and endorsement holders (eg, pistols and restricted weapons).
- As required, perform duties to support the District Arms Office in regulatory functions and/or administration and operational responsibilities of the Arms licensing process.

- Strong interview and report writing skills.
- Ability to be a self-starter, work with mínimal supervision, and excellent time management skills..
- A full driver's license and reliable transport are essential as you will be required to use your personal vehicle for work purposes (costs will be reimbursed).
- Competency in the use of an i-phone and laptop (software used includes Microsoft Office 365; Word, Outlook and re-writable pdf forms).
- Ability to pass police background checks.
- Experience with firearms may be an advantage but is not necessary.
- Ability to understand firearms legislation/regulations.
- Previous experience working in firearms vetting, regulatory environment is preferable
