Our Critical Care Unit at Southland Hospital is an open unit secondary Critical Care unit, and it is on an exciting journey of growth and development. Through the provision of new Critical Care funding from the Ministry of Health, we are in the process of aligning our secondary level unit with the College of Intensive Care Medicine, Medical and Nursing staffing standards. Our primary goal is to rapidly increase our capacity and capability, moving from our current 1 x ICU level bed AND 4 HDU beds to 3x ICU and 3x HDU level beds to better meet the secondary Critical Care needs for Southland patients.

It is an exciting time to be part of Critical Care in Te Waipounamu (the South Island) as the regional clinical network is forming. We are seeking an experienced Nursing Critical Care Nursing Leader with recent contemporary Critical Care experience to lead us through this period of intense change. This is your opportunity to be part of developing and leading our team of dedicated professionals as we continue to grow our Critical Care Unit and the wider Multidisciplinary team.

Our Critical Care unit at Southland provides an open model of care and supports a varied case mix including medical, surgical, trauma, paediatrics, and admissions via our busy emergency department. We offer a telemetry service to our wider hospital and a Patient at Risk Service is likely to be implemented as per the Critical Care network guidelines with oversight from the Critical Care service in the near future. The unit works with Dunedin Hospital Critical Care Unit as our closest Tertiary provider, and we participate as a member of the Te Wai Pounamu Critical Care Network across the whole of the South Island region.

**Mō te tūranga - About the role**

The primary purpose of this role is to provide clinical nursing leadership and expertise to ensure high quality critical patient care delivery, particularly aligning with our commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and promise to provide equitable care to our Māori patients to improve health comes.

Reporting to the Director of Nursing Southland, and strongly supported by a tight knit senior leadership team, you'll foster a culture within the unit that continues to strive for excellence in clinical Critical Care services. Key accountabilities of this role include strategic leadership, strong partnership skills, staff education and development, recruitment, along with responsibility for financial management of the unit. Skills include experience and understanding of production planning, report writing and quality improvement processes and risk management.

To succeed in this role our new Charge Nurse must bring a clear focussed vision that will be aligned locally and regionally with in Te Waipounamu Critical Care Services stakeholders and be familiar with contemporary critical care nursing practices, being an experienced Leader who can demonstrate transformational leadership with the ability to inspire staff as a strong professional advocate. As part of the Te Wai Pounamu Nursing leadership team, you will need to participate in external strategic management planning particularly advocating for secondary unit services.

Operationally you will need to ensure sound recruitment, onboarding systems and processes planning educational development including mentoring and clinical supervision for your junior leadership team. You will need to develop relationships through close liaison with other hospital services and our rural health providers.

**Mōu ake - About you**

In addition to the above, you'll be a Senior Registered Nurse with over five years of recent Critical Care experience, with proven leadership experience and the following qualifications, skills and experience:

- Post Graduate Critical Care qualifications are essential.
- A Master level degree in Nursing or associated relevant health field is highly desirable
- NZ Nursing registration and APC
- A commitment to biculturalism in relation to the Treaty of Waitangi
- Advance clinical practice knowledge - with tertiary experience preferred
- Demonstrated leadership experience at this level - ability to provide direction, support, coaching and staff development
- Commitment to providing excellent care for patients and staff
- Strong accountability for resource management and skills in budget management e.g., Capex, budget, and monthly reconciliation
- Demonstrated expertise in setting standards and managing practice to achieve these standards
