Enjoy our supportive and diverse culture with co-workers always willing to help
- Bring your curiosity and love of learning & solving complex challenges
- Kick start your professional career at the heart of the electricity sector
- Enable critical infrastructure towards a more sustainable energy future. Enjoy meaningful work and exciting challenges_
Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the unique high voltage transmission network crossing mountain passes, forests, farmland, and open sea, and bringing electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed most.
Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system. Our business is growing, and you can grow with us
**Commencing February 2025 in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington**
We invite you to be part of a cohort of 30 Engineering Graduates with various majors. You'll gain a range of skills and put theory and first principles into practice while doing important work with a variety of different teams over your two-year rotational placement programme.
Our Graduates tell us they enjoy:
- Work that has real meaning and impact
- Our inclusive and caring culture and experienced expert colleagues who freely share their knowledge
- Being part of a community and forming lasting bonds they will take with them throughout their careers
You'll receive mentoring from technical experts to build your knowledge of the critical assets that power Aotearoa while you get a sense of how our business and the industry fits together as a whole. This may require travel and a placement/s outside of Wellington. You could be part of:
The National Grid Assets Programme where work may include:
- Substation design, delivery, and standards; working with Service Providers in the field on new substation builds, commissioning new equipment, or maintenance projects
- Protection and Automation projects from inception to completion
- Fault analysis and engineering response to grid events, faults, and root cause analysis of failures
- Learning about equipment and systems associated with Transpower's High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link, and power electronics assets (Static Synchronous Compensators, Static Var Compensators), Synchronous Condensers, and Regional Power Controllers
The Operations Planning Graduate Programme where you could be part of
- The annual HVDC outage
- Planning system outages with internal and external teams
- Identifying and planning approaches to support system security and system operations - short, medium, and long term
- Helping to plan and size the Transmission Grid of the future
Regardless of which programme is a match for you, you'll build strong relationships across the business and gain both deep technical understanding and strengthen your soft skills, along with a good awareness of internal and external customer needs. Ultimately, we will help you explore where and how you wish to shape your career with us.
**What will you bring?**
You'll be studying at a New Zealand University and by the time you start with us in February 2025 you will have completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) ideally with electrical, electronics, mechatronics, or power systems.
You'll be achieving/have achieved a minimum B+/5.5 grade point average in your studies and demonstrate curiosity, outstanding written and verbal communication, and active listening.
Good analytical and problem-solving skills will support your love of detail-orientated work/study, but conversely, you'll be interested in the big picture and future of energy, making a difference to Aotearoa and having a positive impact on the communities we serve.
**While not essential, the following skills are a plus, so please tell us if you have**:
- Basic knowledge/experience of the New Zealand electricity industry
- Skills in scripting/programming/coding
- A foundational understanding of one or more of the following: power system design and operation; and the behaviour of power system plant and equipment in service
**Join Us at Transpower**
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver. This is your opportunity to join us on a mission that affects all New Zealanders, the planet, and the economy.
With over 28 nationalities, our people provide diverse perspectives, knowledge, and deep and varied experience which they love to share. You'll enjoy a range of employee health and wellness benefits and on the job learning and career development over time.
As an Engineering New Zealand Professional Development Partner, we will support you in moving from Emerging Professional to full Member status, and longer term to CPEng.
**Next steps**
**Applications will be reviewed as they are received. **Role closes midnight Tuesday 29th
