Te tūnga | The role

A Principal Statistician leads or undertakes research that is of key strategic importance in the official statistics system - bringing clarity to future directions, to develop recommendations about priority project activity, and ensuring that the current state of knowledge is well understood.

You will bring a collective leadership approach which acknowledges the interconnected nature of our official statistics portfolio both conceptually and practically and it also recognises the need to collaborate and work with and through others to achieve our outcomes and deliver quality statistical products. Fostering long-term relationships with key external networks (domestic and international) to deliver value - for customers, and with Māori, iwi and hapū. You will be an excellent communicator and may be called on to present to senior stakeholders and media.

You will also work across Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ and the data system to better deliver for te Tiriti o Waitangi partners, for example the development of te ao Māori measures of wellbeing.

A critical element of the role is contributing to the development of Stats NZ's technical cohort and supporting capability building across the data system.

Nōu te rourou | What you bring

In your role as Principal Statistician, you will be using your expertise in social science to provide technical leadership to Stats NZ's population and social statistics programme. You'll also have a chance to contribute more broadly to the development of Stats NZ's technical cohort. Therefore, your skill set will balance both your personal attributes and technical leadership experience and include:

- Passion and interest in social wellbeing concepts and the use of data to improve lives
- Experience with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to gaining insights
- Strong relationships across the data system - within Aotearoa, te ao Māori and internationally
- Coaching and mentoring - excited about developing new talent
- Critical thinking, problem solving and the ability to challenge and influence in a constructive way
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a way that can be easily understood by a non-technical audience
