As part of Fisheries New Zealand's commitment to strengthening our partnership with Māori, a new Fisheries and Aquaculture Treaty Partnerships Directorate has been formed. As a Senior Customary Fisheries Adviser, you will join the growing Customary Fisheries Team and work to maintain strong relationships with iwi and hapū for the Crown to effectively deliver its fisheries obligations.

**Your core responsibilities in this role would include**:

- Supporting the delivery and implementation of the Ministry's Customary Fisheries obligations to tangata whenua.
- Leading engagement with iwi and hapū to deliver tangible outcomes for Māori.
- Providing advice, facilitation, and support throughout the process of implementing the Customary Fishing Regulations.
- Providing ongoing support to regional Iwi Fisheries Forums to allow iwi and hapū to input into and participate in fisheries management decision-making.
- Providing advice to Ministers on the appointment of tāngata tiaki/kaitiaki.

Mōu - About You

**We are looking for someone who**:

- Can build collaborative relationships and establish credibility with Māori, sector stakeholders, and partners across Fisheries New Zealand, MPI, other New Zealand Government agencies and service providers.
- Has demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with tangata whenua.
- Understands the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act, the Fisheries Act 1996, and other statutes as they relate to Customary Fisheries.
- Has previous experience working in partnership with Māori.
- Can utilise tikanga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori to facilitate engagement processes and to effectively present information to Māori.
- Can work independently.
- Is fluent in Te Reo Māori (this is desirable but not essential).
