Work on projects you're passionate about.
- Bring your strategic communication strengths to conservation.
- Be part of a supportive flexible working environment.
**He angitūtanga: The opportunity**
It’s an exciting time to be part of Auckland Council’s Natural Environment group. As environmental awareness continues to grow across Tāmaki Makaurau, we’re investing in a broad suite of initiatives that support community-powered conservation.
We’re looking for a Community Conservation Advisor to join our Community Conservation and Engagement team within the Environmental Services department. In this key role, you’ll work strategically to shape innovative, inclusive programmes that drive meaningful conservation outcomes and support others to deliver on the ground.
We are looking for an experienced, collaborative advisor who can bring both strategic thinking and communication expertise to help us design, improve and promote effective conservation initiatives.
- In this role you will:
Provide strategic input into the design and continuous improvement of community conservation programmes.
- Use your communication skills to help shape messaging, digital content and engagement materials that connect with diverse communities.
- Support and coordinate key communication channels including our website, campaigns and social media to promote conservation work.
- Work across teams and partners to align conservation goals with community needs and aspirations.
This role is all about understanding the community conservation landscape and using that knowledge to strengthen strategy, design and delivery and supporting our frontline teams to implement these programmes effectively.
**He kōrero mōu: About you**
You are a strategic thinker with a strong foundation in community engagement and conservation and you bring to the team a superpower: strategic communication.
You understand that communication is a powerful lever for behaviour change and collective action. You’re skilled at crafting messages that resonate, and you know how to use digital tools including websites and social media to build awareness, inspire participation and amplify impact. Experience with Umbraco CMS or a similar content management system is not essential, but would be a real advantage. In this role, your communication expertise will strengthen the design and delivery of community-powered conservation programmes across Tāmaki Makaurau.
You have at least five years’ experience in community engagement or a related sector and you’re confident working with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders in a service or advisory capacity. You bring strong relationship-building skills to support collaboration across teams, iwi and partners to achieve shared outcomes. You’re comfortable working through others, using behavioural insights and best practice engagement approaches to shape initiatives that drive change.
You’ll hold a relevant qualification — such as ecology, environmental science, social science, community development, behavioural studies or communications and have a solid understanding of Aotearoa’s ecology and biodiversity. You’re a capable project manager who can juggle multiple priorities, and you bring strong evaluation skills to support continuous improvement.
Importantly, you're confident using digital tools to support your work, including website content management, social media, and other communication platforms. You’re committed to te ao Māori and either able to use te reo Māori in everyday interactions or actively growing your confidence in this space.
**Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer**
Auckland Council is the largest local government council across Oceania, serving over 1.7 million people and contributing towards making Tāmaki Makaurau a world-class city.
