You are an experienced Tradesperson with a Trade Qualification and at least 3 years’ experience in your field. You are comfortable with the idea of working in an all-male prison where the men come from all walks of life. You have well-developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to create and nurture effective working relationships.
You possess a personal set of values and ethics, and attitudes towards prisoners, which will serve as role-model behaviour to the men in our care, as well as colleagues and the wider community. You will demonstrate a commitment to an education and training philosophy and approach that is appropriate for working with prisoners.
You are a natural communicator and leader and can manage small groups of people well. You are confident, possess the utmost integrity, and are a team-player.
**Mo tenei turanga mahi |About this Role**
Reporting to the Business Employment Manager, you will work as part of a passionate and committed team who support the men in our care to gain on-the-job Training, and skills and experience in Industries which they can use upon release to gain employment.
Key Functions include:
- Supervise the behaviour and activities of prisoners on a daily basis while in Industries
- Assist in the rehabilitation of prisoners by actively participating in and overseeing their work and training
- Lead prisoners to deliver against production targets, ensuring that products are completed on time, within budget and to a high standard
- Daily audit of all tools and equipment in their workshop area
- Tool issue and reissue and maintenance of all tools and equipment in the workshop
- Use of forklift and associated equipment in loading and reloading trucks that deliver supplies and pick up finished products
- Use of computer for inventory, stock take and ordering purposes
- Entry of offender training progress and behaviour on IOMS data base
- Deliver training to enable prisoners to gain qualifications from nationally recognised training packages and accredited courses
- Assess student performance against competency standards and recommend and/or provide additional training, where necessary, for students to gain competency
- At all times, promote the value and integration of education and vocational training to all prisoners, particularly those who are not inclined towards such participation
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends and practices concerning adult education and the delivery of training
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- The highest levels of personal integrity and ethical behaviour;
- A Trade Qualification and at least 3 years’ experience in your field
- Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills;
- An eye for detail and adherence to process;
- Strong ITC skills;
- Experience in the Criminal Justice system (desirable);
- Management or Supervisory experience (desirable);
- Experience in training others to achieve NZQA credits (desirable);
- A commitment to better outcomes for Māori and an appreciation for the partnership principles in the Treaty of Waitangi.
