The Ministry for Primary Industries are currently recruiting for a Senior Data Analyst to join our Operational Programme Delivery directorate, which forms part of our wider Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service business unit based in Wellington.
Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role
As the Senior Data Analyst, Delivery Monitoring and Reporting you will have a unique opportunity to enable Te Uru Rākau New Zealand Forest Service to ensure timely and accurate provision of monitoring and reporting of its Programme Objectives.
The position will have a focus on business systems and continuous improvement with some of the work being project based, ranging in scope and size.
You'll work alongside team members within Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service and more broadly within MPI, programme workstream leads, and external agencies to ensure that data and reporting is accurate, fit-for-purpose and all requirements are met and align with our strategic direction.
**Core responsibilities for the role**:
- Coordinate performance reporting against the productivity and operational expectations of Te Uru Rākau New Zealand Forest Service afforestation grant programmes
- Produce regular reports to support the provision of analysis and insights to advise the leadership team of trends and emerging issues
- Use Power BI to automate, standardize and extend reporting scope and capacity.
- Implement “what if” analysis to strengthen decision support
- Lead the analysis of operational data and develop methods of improving accuracy and availability
- Work collaboratively with other reporting and data analysis functions and requirements to avoid duplication of effort, accuracy of information and ensure consistency of approach

We are looking for an expert in data analysis and reporting who understands the value that this provides to support decision making and assurance of business performance. To do this, you will have the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships and credibility with senior management and a wide range of stakeholders.
You will display the necessary communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate information effectively to diverse individuals, groups, and interests.
You will bring a high degree perseverance to follow through on initiatives to successful completion or resolution and have the capacity to work on multiple reporting initiatives. You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to identify improvements to data accuracy and manage systems and processes.
**To be successful in this role, you will offer**:
- Proven knowledge and experience in analysis and reporting in a large organisation
- A strong understanding of the financial and performance reporting requirements within the Public Sector and relevant legislation
- Experience in analysis of performance information to identify emerging trends and issues to support continuous improvement
- Has experience building dashboards and data tools using business intelligence software, like MicroStrategy and Power BI
- Is confident in using Structured Query Language (SQL) and relational database management
- Can translate information from Subject Matter Experts and others into automated processes, tools and templates that are appropriate and fit-for purpose for the specific audience
- Relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent experience
