Te Whare o Tapatahi is a dedicated rough sleeping shelter providing emergency accommodation and holistic support for individuals experiencing homelessness in Ngā Motu. Operated by YMCA Ngā Motu, the shelter embodies the values of manaakitanga (care and support), kotahitanga (unity), and whanaungatanga (relationships) to create a safe and supportive environment for tangata whaiora (clients).
At the initial stage, we will only be providing bathroom, laundry and kitchen facilities for the rough sleeping community for 4 days a week between the hours of 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm each night. We require four **Support Workers on a 6-month fixed term basis for 3 hours a night for 2 days a week (6 hours per week).**There will be two Support Workers on site each night.
The Support Workers will be responsible for providing direct care and support to individuals experiencing homelessness, assisting them with the shelter facilities, provide supervision, crisis intervention, security and maintain health and safety while the individuals are using our site.
- Experience in homelessness services, emergency accommodation or social work.
- An understanding of the challenges faced by homeless individuals.
- Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity towards individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Ao Māori values and culturally responsive practices.
- Experience in crisis response, de-escalation, and trauma-informed practice.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Understanding of mental health, addiction and domestic violence support services.
- Strict adherence to health and safety standards and procedures.
- A full clean driver’s licence is preferred.
Desirable:
- Experience working in a Kaupapa Maori or bicultural setting.
- Familiarity with Housing First, harm reduction and strength-based approaches.
- Ability to speak Te Reo Maori or a Pacific language.
Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa.
