The role - Te mahi
As a Research Assistant, you will undertake research for Māori law in Te Kōti Whenua Māori (the Māori Land Court).
In 2021, Te Kōti Whenua Māori initiated a new tikanga-based dispute resolution process, in response to amendments to the Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993. This research will analyse how tikanga principles are being used in the new dispute resolution process, compare and contrast that use with the court's traditional adjudication process and assess the outcomes for Māori landowners from both.
The use of tikanga Māori law in Te Kōti Whenua Māori Land Court dispute resolution mediation service and the outcomes for Māori landowners. This project is a collaboration between Metiria Stanton Turei (University of Otago) and Adrienne Paul (University of Canterbury), and is funded by Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga.
Your skills and experience - Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
**To be successful in this role you must have**:
- Te reo Māori Level 7 or completed Te Māhuri or equivalent.
- Excellent written skills, and familiarity with tikanga Māori and legal research.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate in a culturally appropriate manner.
- The ability to maintain professional networks and effective working relationships with a broad range of people, including mana whenua, tangata whenua, iwi, hapū, and other stakeholders.
- The ability to plan and prioritise work, manage multiple activities, work autonomously as well as be an effective and collaborative member of a high-performing team.

This is a part-time (4-7 hours week), fixed-term (36 weeks) position.
