This role aims to provide high quality Paediatric Haematology/Oncology practice in the inpatient, outpatient and outreach settings, undertake and/or participate in research activities appropriate to the service, supervise junior medical staff and ensure they are accountable for their practise and performance and participate in on-call roster with other Paediatric Haematology/Oncology staff.

**About the Team/Service/Location**

The Starship Blood and Cancer Centre serve a population of over 3 million and is located within Starship Child Health, Grafton, Auckland. The centre provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up for children and adolescents with cancer and non-malignant haematological conditions.

The service is multidisciplinary, which reflects the wide-ranging impact a diagnosis of childhood cancer may have on a child and family. Nurses, doctors, social workers, play specialists, teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, Kaiatawhai (Maori Support Liaison), Pacific Island support workers, child psychologists and psychiatrists are all important and integral to our service.

The acute component of the service involves initial diagnosis and management, treatment of complications of therapy and assessment during treatment. The chronic component includes long term follow-up of children and young people, both for recurrence and late effects of therapy. Palliative care caters for the physical and psychological needs of dying children and their families.

The service also provides a comprehensive Haemopoietic Stem Cell (Bone Marrow Transplant and CORD) Transplant service for New Zealand. There are over 100 new malignant diagnoses a year and we provide a national service for allogeneic stem cell transplantation. In addition, we manage a wide variety of non-malignant haematological conditions including haemophilia and the transfusion dependent anaemias.

The successful applicant would work within a large multi-disciplinary team including 11 SMOs. Responsibilities include in and outpatient clinical work, supervision and teaching of junior staff. There will be protected time for a designated research project.
