**1. GENERAL**

The Information Technology Services (ITS) Division is responsible for the coordination of information and

communications technology (ICT) planning for the University; the delivery of robust, reliable core ICT

infrastructure and enterprise systems, and the provision of professional ICT consultancy and customer

focused support services.

The ICT vision is “To engage, enable, innovate and protect our ICT services, and empower the University

of Waikato to leverage the value of ICT to achieve its strategic goals.”

This role is part of the ITS Applications Services Group, the Application Services team is a services

our clients to better serve their internal and external customers.

**2. POSITION PURPOSE**

The Senior Software Developer position is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, testing

and delivery of robust, sustainable software components that support the business functions of the

University and promote the effectiveness and efficiency of the process.

The position contributes to the success of the Application Services team in providing a professional level of

technical support and guidance to University of Waikato business groups. This role contributes in all aspects

enterprise context and providing feedback on architectural design and technical documentation for systems

related initiatives. As a senior role it is essential that this role takes a technical leadership position on work

activities and projects. This role must also provide mentorship and guidance to other team members of the

team and work collaboratively across ITS and the wider University.

**5. KEY TASKS**

5.1 Software Analysis & Development
- Work with Business Analysts to capture and review documented business requirements.
- Work with Architects and Solution Analysts to review solution designs and specifications.

- Develop new software components with appropriate in-code documentation.
- Enhance existing software components as part of a change request process to enable new

functionality.
- Provide assistance with the evaluation of new system software; review system software updates

and identify those that merit action.
- Investigate and coordinate the resolution of potential and actual service problems.
- Ensure that operational documentation for system software is fit for purpose and current

including code repository maintenance.
- Assist with the creation of user focused technical documentation for enhancements and new

developments.
- Collaborate with the Application Services team on developing standards and procedures for

software development.
- Provide feedback on the ITS/Application Services standards for using programming tools and

techniques.
- Provide feedback on the tools and processes used for managing the development environment

including version control / source code management and deployment.
- Participate in peer review processes to identify and remedy coding issues.
- Research, understand and recommend software technology advancements that will benefit the

- Participate within project estimation activities and provide regular estimates to complete /

5.2 Application Support
- Provide technical leadership, direction and mentoring to other team members for support issues
