**Tēnei tūranga - About the role**:
The Small Business Policy Team is seeking an experienced Policy Advisor and Senior Policy Advisor to deliver on our large work programme, and help small businesses to achieve.
Our Policy Team sits within the Small Business, Commerce and Consumer Policy branch (SBCC Branch). The SBCC Branch is the Government’s lead advisor on the commercial environment in which all New Zealand businesses and consumers operate. The Branch look after the laws and institutions that underpin how businesses and consumers interact with each other including: competition, fair trading and consumer guarantees, market performance, financial conduct, corporate governance, intellectual property, and stewardship of the dispute resolution system.
The team’s focus is on understanding the needs of small businesses, and creating an environment that empowers and enables small businesses to succeed. We provide advice on issues affecting small businesses, and the interventions required to empower them to aspire, succeed and thrive.
We work across teams that collectively report to the Minister for Small Business. This includes initiatives such as the Regional Business Partner Network, Digital Boost and business.govt.nz.
Our work is also guided by the Small Business Strategy, as prepared by the Small Business Council, which looks to:
- Better understand the needs and experiences of small businesses
- Improve small business access to finance
- Build small business skills and capability
- Create a connected enabling regulatory environment.
Digital enablement and digital skills of small businesses is a critical enabler across the small business work programme.

The Government identified small businesses as one of their five priorities for economic recovery. Your work in the Small Business Policy team will support New Zealand to achieve a sustainable and productive long-term recovery from COVID-19.

We are looking for motivated people with experience in solving tricky policy problems and formulating high-quality policy and regulatory advice for a range of issues and projects.
For the role of either Policy Advisor or Senior Policy Advisor, ideally you will:
- Have a good base of experience in public policy as a Policy Advisor/Senior Policy Advisor or transferrable skills from an advisory, regulatory, legal or similar role.
- Be a logical thinker, problem solver, and have a healthy level of curiosity.
- Bring knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes.
- Enjoy working on tricky problems, generating ideas and coming up with solutions.
- Have or want to improve your cultural capability and knowledge of te ao Māori, te reo Māori and how Te Tiriti o Waitangi informs our work.
- Have the ability to build relationships with others and work collaboratively.
- Have the ability to work through ambiguity and deliver results.
For the role of Senior Policy Advisor, ideally you will also bring:
- Experience leading complex projects.
- Passion for leading and coaching others to develop their policy craft and take their careers to the next level.
- Strong stakeholder relationship building, influencing and engagement skills to gain the cooperation and commitment of others.
