Shama Ethnic Women’s Trust (commonly known as Shama) is a charitable trust formed in 2002 after the identification of a gap in available services for ethnic women and their families that are run by ethnic women. Shama aims to support the development of a truly multicultural New Zealand where all women from ethnic* minorities would be fully integrated into New Zealand society, to live lives of dignity, free from fear of violence and discrimination, and to be recognised as valuable contributors to their local communities.

Shama Ethnic Women’s Trust is looking for a skilled community researcher to lead a short-term project to identify the needs and barriers faced by ethnic elder people—especially women—in accessing services in the Waikato region.

We’re seeking someone who:

- Has experience in conducting social research and/or community engagement.
- Understands the cultural and systemic barriers affecting ethnic communities.
- Is confident working independently and engaging with diverse groups.
- Can produce a clear, practical report with recommendations.

You’ll be supported by Shama’s team and connected to stakeholders, but will manage your own work schedule and invoice us for time worked (up to 180 hours).

*Ethnic communities include migrants, former refugees, long-term settlers, and multi-generational New Zealanders who identify as African, Asian, Continental European, Latin American, Middle Eastern.

**Job Type**: Freelance
Contract length: 6 months

Pay: $50.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5 - 10 per week
