Front-end Developer

Catch is on the hunt for another **HTML/CSS/JS specialist** who is passionate about **component driven development**. The kind of person who has been mucking around with websites since they were teenagers. Someone who understands the fundamentals of CSS and is able to discuss the pros and cons of methodologies such as **Object Oriented CSS, ITCSS, BEM** (to name a few).

We design, build and support award-winning digital products, campaigns, tools and services for some of New Zealand’s biggest and best brands in the private and public sector, helping them establish, grow and nurture their connections with customers. Our goal is to create digital experiences that make the complex easy.

As a front-end developer, you won't necessarily have a degree, but you will have 3+ years professional experience. You care about the technical implementation, user experience and everything in between, yet realistic and have the ability to balance innovative ideas, deadlines and budget to ensure projects stay on track and client outcomes are consistently met.

You might be someone who started out as a web designer but prefers to get their kicks from reproducing beautiful UIs, faithfully and thoughtfully.

The main focus of this role is writing well structured, accessible HTML and flexible, well-architected CSS. We also need you to know JavaScript.

Our Front-end developers write **SCSS** using **BEM** with an **ITCSS** based structure. They create and maintain digital pattern libraries. They write modular, re-usable, extensible and beautiful code.

**Requirements**:

- 3+ years of proven experience, delivering small to large interactive/digital projects on time, within budget and with happy clients
- Appreciation of human-centred design and a strong desire to work in a creative environment
- Willingness to travel when required predominantly to main cities in NZ (occasionally overnight)
- Understand and work well within clearly defined project constraints, such as client goals, technical considerations and budgets
- Excellent problem solving skills, a love for technical challenges, and a willingness to learn
- Ability to work in a variety of client settings and across platforms
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of people
- Experience working closely with designers and back end developers - helping to bridge knowledge gaps, raise risks early and develop robust solutions from design through to implementation.
- Experience working in an Agile environment.

**You must have detailed knowledge and experience with**:
**HTML**
- Semantic HTML
- Accessibility
- Document Structure Best Practices
- Browser/platform optimisation and understanding of compatibility issues, feature support etc
- Templating languages esp. JSX and Twig
- Machine readability and SEO.

**SCSS/SAS**
- BEM
- Browser/platform optimisation and understanding of compatibility issues, feature support etc
- Mobile first and responsive
- Component driven development
- CSS-in-JS methods such as Styled Components or CSS Modules.

**JavaScript**
- ES6 and Babel
- JavaScript frameworks, esp. Angular, React, Next.js and jQuery
- Knowledge of testing frameworks e.g. Karma or Jest
- NPM/Yarn
- Reading/writing webpack config for building JS and CSS
- Gulp
