We are seeking a highly motivated and
skilled Brachytherapy Fellow to join our team in a dynamic and supportive environment. The successful
brachytherapy techniques.
The Team
Canterbury Regional Cancer and
Haematology Service (CRCHS) provides radiation services to a regional
population of approximately 700,000. CRCHS currently employs ten radiation
oncologists, 13 medical oncologists, six haematologists and four palliative
care physicians. We are a collaborative unit and work closely with a highly
skilled team of radiation therapists, physicists, nurses and specialists from
other medical disciplines.
CRCHS has full accreditation for radiation
oncology training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of
Radiologists. In addition to eight radiation oncology registrar training posts,
we have trainees in medical oncology, haematology and palliative care. We
provide medical student teaching for University of Otago, Christchurch school
of medicine curriculum. Staff within the radiation oncology department hold positions
within the university. We are known throughout New Zealand and beyond for our
commitment to delivering the highest standard of teaching and training at all levels,
giving confidence that you will be well supported and receive excellent
training in brachytherapy.
The department has four linear
accelerators, all with six-degree of freedom couches, a wide-bore CT-simulator,
Monaco treatment planning system, Mosaiq health information system, Flexitron
HDR Brachytherapy and ABC deep inspiratory breath hold units. We led the
introduction of stereotactic lung radiation therapy to New Zealand departments,
and expanded the stereotactic programme to include CNS metastases and other
oligometastatic sites.
The Brachytherapy service is well supported by
the urologists and gynaecological oncologists and a specialist nursing and
radiation therapist team. Christchurch Public Hospital provides a Brachytherapy
service for the whole South Island of New Zealand, with approximately 80-90
courses per year. Low dose rate seed
brachytherapy for prostate cancer is performed in the private sector. This seed
programme is the busiest in New Zealand. You will be able to participate and
train in all aspects of seed brachytherapy in conjunction with the team in
private.
We have an established research group,
conducting both radiation and systemic trials. We have close links with the
Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group and have been lead recruiters on a number
of TROG trials. We have presented our brachytherapy experience at recent research
conferences. Which means, you will have ample opportunities for research.

Experience
You
will need to hold the FRANZCR, or an equivalent qualification, that would
enable registration as a specialist radiation oncologist by the Medical Council
of New Zealand. In addition to your clinical, research, academic and
administration duties, you will be participating in the after-hours on-call roster.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team
are essential. Additional desirable skills include experience or interest in
performing brachytherapy procedures, clinical research and registrar teaching.
