Nelson’s Mayor and Councillors Office has a new opportunity as a Senior Advisor. In this pivotal role you will provide strategic advice and support to the Mayor, and act as a key liaison for Elected Members, Senior Council Staff and the public. You will proactively identify issues, risks and opportunities, and ensuring the Mayor and Councillors office is able to prioritise these and their business objectives successfully.

Using your advanced communication and relationship management skills, you will support elected members to navigate the Council processes and enable effective communication between the key stakeholders. Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead a team of two consisting of a Communications Adviser and an Executive Assistant. Together you will provide high quality advice, support and services to internal and external customers.

We’re looking for someone with the following competencies:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Well-developed relationship management skills including ability to build trust and credibility early
- High level of political and policy acumen
- Ability to lead and motivate a team
- Excellent report writing skills
- A tertiary qualification in an appropriate field
- Ideally you will also have:

- Understanding of the public sector including Local Government decision making processes and relevant legislation
- Understanding and commitment to the principals of the Treaty of Waitangi
