The Advisor role covers the portfolio encompassed by the Residential Tenancy Act 1986 (RTA), specialising in rentals for private housing, and boarding facilities. You will get to know the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, situations that are not covered by the RTA, and the Healthy Homes Standards. You will also sometimes assist our Advisor on emergency, transitional and social housing.

The Housing Advice Centre is a small non-governmental organisation that has existed since 1988. We are an inclusive, welcoming service providing advice, education and support to tenants, landlords, and home seekers for emergency, transitional, social, private housing, boarding, flatting, and student accommodation. We run several community programmes on housing, including one for emergency housing education on private and social housing, and a secondary school programme for students and youth. We also coordinate the Housing Needs Monitoring Group between government ministries, local council, accommodation providers, and NGOs from around the region.

Ideal applicants will demonstrate:

- Excellent in customer service and/or education
- Demonstrates a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Empathetic and demonstrates an understanding of whanaungatanga
- Can work effectively in a team
- Excellent problem-solving and time management skills
- The ability to connect and develop relationships with other related agencies, including the Ministry of Social Development and Kāinga Ora
- Excellent digital skills

Preferred experience (but not required) could include:

- Understanding of policy, legislation, or case law
- Mental health and well-being experience
- Experience in research or relevant study related to housing, homes, tenancy, social work, social services, social policy, business law, NGOs, not-for-profits etc.
