**The role**
The Superintendent - Environment is responsible for leading the implementation and coordination of environmental management and monitoring programs, concurrent rehabilitation programs and for advising management at Waihi Gold on environmental legal obligations and commitments. This role is also responsible for leading the Environmental direction at the Waihi operation and implementing plans that effectively represent, promote and protect the company's business interests consistent with OceanaGolds IMS and Environmental Policies, Procedures and discipline specific standards.
**Key tasks and responsibilities**:
- Implement, manage, monitor and review the Integrated Management System including robust inspection and audit programmes to ensure compliance
- Provide site leadership to create working environments that encourage personnel to actively contribute to Sustainability by managing risk in compliance with company objectives, policies, procedures, safe work practices, and regulations
- Prepare annual budgets and manage department costs of approximately 4 million annually
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation and distribution of all reporting documentation (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.), in line with OceanaGold and regulatory requirements
- Implement, manage, monitor and review Waihi Gold's management system including robust inspection and audit programmes to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements relating to Environmental aspects
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation and distribution of all reporting documentation (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.), in line with OceanaGold and regulatory requirements
- Provide site leadership that encourages personnel to actively contribute to health, safety and environmental relations
- Provide direct supervision, mentoring and effective leadership to the site's HSE Team ensuring that team members receive training, support and resources to work effectively and safely and review progress towards individual performance goals
- Manage the acquisition of environmental approvals for site operations and exploration
- Manage and advocate Waihi Gold's position in relation to changes to Acts, Regulations and Policy to protect existing operations and provide for future opportunities
- Ensure emergency structures, response plans and resources are in place for site emergencies and that appropriate training is undertaken in relation to these in line with current regulation
- Develop and manage site training systems and delivery to ensure compliance with New Zealand regulation and safe work environments
- Assign tasks according to individuals abilities and agree what is to be accomplished. Give clear instructions, actively listen, provide constructive feedback, and hold regular meetings
- Share wisdom, knowledge and experience with team to encourage increased performance
- Challenge attitudes and behaviours to promote wider thinking
- Provide leadership and coaching to establish a strong culture of continuous improvement
- Coach, support and develop the team to build knowledge and skills to provide coverage and to build succession plans
- Seven or more years experience in environmental management at an operating mine site or other natural resource area
- Extensive knowledge of New Zealand environmental rules and regulations
- Ability to manage staff and ensure that the department has clear objectives and strategies and that they are carried out in a manner that the department's direction is clear
- Knowledge of mine management including operation and other major aspects of the mine and ability to contribute meaningfully to the senior management team
- Ability to clearly understand statutory environmental obligations and ensure management at the site complies with these obligations
- Experience with environmental management systems and ISO14000
- Experience in concurrent rehabilitation and monitoring
