**Tēnei tūranga - About the role**:
We are looking for a permanent Senior Policy Advisor for the Strategy and Performance Team which sits within the System, Strategy and Performance Team in the Building System Performance Branch, MBIE.

Our Senior Policy Advisors work on complex and high-profile strategic government policy projects. They use strong communication and influencing skills to engage and work collaboratively with various groups and decision-makers. They have a good knowledge of legislative frameworks and processes, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and a strong understanding of the wider political environment.

As a member of the Strategy and Performance Team in System, Strategy and Performance, you will be responsible for supporting the overall capability of the team.

**You will**:

- undertake complex policy analysis and lead development of inovative, practical and durable policy options (including through engagement with stakeholders)
- provide authoritative policy advice often in areas that are complex and sensitive
- take the lead and project manage complex policy work and project teams
- enhance the overall capability of the team through coaching and mentoring team members during their day-to-day work and against their longer-term development plans.

The primary focus of the System Strategy and Performance Team within the Building System Performance Branch is to monitor system performance and sector trends, and use this evidence base to develop a strategy for the branch that responds to key issues and opportunities affecting the performance of the building regulatory system.

We are responsible for organising and facilitating strategic planning across MBIE’s building regulatory system. We help colleagues across the system understand what is happening in the construction sector and make decisions on the most effective actions we can take as regulatory stewards. To do this, we maintain a strategic view of current and emerging trends in the building and construction sector; work with colleagues to understand how to monitor and evaluate how the building system is performing; and help colleagues use this evidence base to determine our overall vision and create strategies for priority work areas.

The Building System Performance Branch is the government’s lead advisor on the building regulatory system. It provides policy and technical advice on the building system, performance standards, and the implementation of regulations for the built environment. The branch has a stewardship role, defining roles and responsibilities within the building regulatory system and ensuring the strong performance of the system.

We are looking for a Senior Policy Advisor with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, who is comfortable with ambiguity, can take initiative and work independently, and is able to deliver results.

You will have a good tertiary qualification; a legal right to live and work NZ; and will meet the personal specifications required for the role as outlined in the Position Description.

Given the nature of this strategic policy role it is desirable if you also bring:

- an understanding of how to make the links between long-term vision and short-term work planning
- an understanding of and experience in creating processes to help people make decisions
- skills and experience in facilitating groups of people containing diverse skill sets and personalities, in person or on-line, to make decisions
- skills and experience in being able to organise and run multiple processes at the same time
- experience in conveying information effectively to decision-makers at a high-level.
