Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role
Farmers and growers are faced with a complex and ever-changing context for managing their business for today and the future. MPI is keen to increase the level of support provided in the regions.
The new service will provide on-the-ground support around the country. We'll connect farmers and growers to the right information, expertise and opportunities. We'll help them to navigate requirements around climate, water and the environment.
The new service will connect to the work already undertaken by MPI, the private sector and industry organisations, to increase support and help build on sustainability practices by:
- Supporting farmers and growers to take an integrated approach to farm planning, tackle environmental challenges and adapt to change
- Helping farmers and growers to access to advisory services in the public and private sector, to help improve on-farm performance and sustainability
- Helping Māori landowners to build their capability and make improvements on underutilised land
- Encouraging innovative farming practice by providing access to tools and resources
- Helping to improve on-farm biosecurity and grow resilience
- Helping to prepare for, and responding to, adverse events like floods and droughts
- Promoting funding and support opportunities
You will be based in existing MPI offices in the regions and will have access to a work vehicle.
We support a flexible work environment which can take many forms including remote working, flexible start and finish times or compressed hours.
Mōu - About You
You will be a good listener who is open to new perspectives. You'll have the ability to understand the different needs and challenges that farmers and growers are faced with in the regions.
**You will have**:
- Broad experience in the primary sector and NZ farming systems.
- Ability to identify and develop effective working relationships with people from all parts of an organisation and community.
- Understanding of rural communities, their issues and opportunities.
- Problem solver with the ability to attend to detail.
- Knowledge and experience with best practice adult learning including facilitating learning sessions.
- Influencing skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work without direct supervision.

On Farm Support is part of MPI's Agriculture and Investment Services business unit. We work to create a thriving and sustainable future for farmers, growers, primary industries and rural communities, and caring for the health and wellbeing of animals.
