Our Competition Branch is looking for a Head of Mergers to lead the Mergers team and make a significant contribution to merger control in New Zealand. This is a permanent role based in our either Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) office or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

Reporting to the General Manager Competition, this role leads a dedicated and supportive team of technical experts who manage the competition assessment and analysis of mergers and acquisitions under the Commerce Act in New Zealand.

The Head of Mergers is focused on leading a team of professionals, portfolio planning, managing people and resourcing, and providing strategic, technical and thought leadership to their team on merger investigations. You will work closely with the Chief Economist - Competition and the Chief Legal Counsel - Competition, providing expert advice to Commissioners. The Head of Mergers leads the external engagement relating to this portfolio of work.

You will need the ability to lead and communicate clear priorities and to manage through managers. Having profound experience in undertaking competition analysis in markets will ensure you know when to get into the detail of high priority or high profile or complex mergers and when to trust in your team's expertise.

- significant experience analysing the competitive impact of mergers
- an expert understanding of competition law
- experience in leading investigation teams
- strong people, time and project management capabilities
- the ability to think strategically, and to manage and prioritise a portfolio of work
- well-developed relationship management skills
- the ability to present complex information and advice succinctly
