At Te Kura Mātai Ahupūngao | Department of Physics, we perform cutting-edge research across fundamental and applied physics. We work to understand how black holes are formed by massive stars, how the Earth’s climate is changing, and how bacterial colonies grow and thrive. We also use our knowledge of physics to create new tools and technologies, creating new devices for cubesats and building instruments to diagnose illnesses in living tissue. The Department has a strong focus on photonics research, with specific topics ranging from theoretical quantum optics to the development of new laser technologies.
