Mō te tūnga | About the role
Offender Employment (OE) is all about giving prisoners the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release.
Tongariro Prison farm is a property of approximately 660ha consisting of an Internal and External farm, mostly dry stock, just outside Turangi, South of Taupo.
Farm Instructors are involved in all aspects of the day to day running of the property, assisted by work parties of tane from within the prison. It is a diverse role involving custodial responsibilities, industry-based responsibilities and training responsibilities.
While working on the farms, prisoners work towards Level 2 and 3 certificates in agriculture and/or micro credentials, through the Primary ITO. Instructors are expected to hold, or to be willing to gain, unit standard 4098 in adult education, or equivalent.
Farm Instructors work an 8 hour day (7.30am - 3.30pm) on a 5 days roster, with some rostered weekends, reporting to a Principal Instructor. Public Holidays with the possibility of some overtime or callouts may be required.
A comprehensive Frontline Futures Introduction into Corrections and extensive initial training is provided for the successful applicant. Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses. This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.
