Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has lots of practical skills and enjoys protecting threatened species? If yes, then this is the job for you.
These positions operate for 9 months each year from September to June each year. As a Ranger you will be joining our talented delivery teams carrying out critical conservation work with Orange-fronted kākāriki (OFK).
The focus of these positions is to carry out trapping and monitoring of pests in order to achieve protection of (OFK) in the Hawdon, Poulter, and South Branch Hurunui Valleys. In particular, the successful applicants will be required to:
- Complete pest monitoring with tracking tunnels and other methods
- Service the trap and bait station network across all 3 valleys
- Maintain infrastructure within the project site
- Assist with monitoring of OFK when appropriate
- Assist with other biodiversity duties as and when required
- Assist with volunteer supervision
We are looking for responsible and reliable people with a high level of physical fitness, patience, perseverance, willingness to learn and who are comfortable living and working in remote back country settings.
Work is rostered and usually on a 10 day on and 4 day off roster and normal 80 hour fortnights. Most work time will be spent based from huts in the field.

We are looking for a team player, who is not afraid of hard work, and who have the following skills:
- Knowledge and experience in field delivery work
- Experience leading teams in the field
- Experience and qualifications in working with Light Ultility Vehicles (LUV), 4WD vehicles and other field-based equipment
- A current First Aid certificate
- A good basic knowledge of conservation
- Good communication skills and an ability to get on with people
- A valid full driver's licence
- Experience in trapping and pest control
- A current Approved Handlers Certificate and Controlled Substance License would be an advantage
- Chainsaw qualification and experience would be an advantage

The successful applicant will join the North Canterbury OFK team which sits in the Operations Group. The team includes the Manukura (Operations Manager), Senior Ranger, two Supervisors, two C band rangers, and seven B band rangers. The kākāriki group also run a team on Oruawairua/Blumine Island which consists of a logistics support ranger, a C-band team leader, and a B-band biodiversity ranger.
**About the Orange-fronted kākāriki programme**
Orange-fronted kākāriki (OFK) are an endemic species of parakeet remaining only in three beech forested valleys in North Canterbury (Poulter, Hawdon and Hurunui South Branch), on Blumine Island in Marlborough Sounds, and most recently, in Brook Sanctuary, Nelson.
OFK are ranked as “Nationally Critical” according to the Department's threat classification system. This is the severest classification and means the species needs immediate intervention to prevent
