PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF ROLE
The establishment of the ST role in area schools was part of the 2007 Area School Teachers’ Collective
Agreement settlement and is intended to provide professional learning support for teachers in area schools. At
CCS, the ST is also responsible for providing formal support and mentoring to Beginning Teachers.

In addition, the role allows for the development of a different career opportunity to retain teachers in the
classroom through the provision of an alternative career path to the more traditional management one.

The ST role offers the recipient the capacity to lead, develop and demonstrate their professional

learning/leadership skills with other teachers.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION DESCRIPTION
This document serves as a basis for employment into the role and ongoing performance appraisal when
undertaking the role of Specialist Classroom Teacher.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
The recipient will possess the skill set and capacity to lead and enhance the quality of teaching practices at

Cornerstone Christian School through supporting teachers and mentoring for improvement.

STs are encouraged to explore and develop professional learning support approaches which may include a
variety of focus areas such as coaching, mentoring, leading mentoring programmes, leading professional
learning groups, providing professional reading and leading discussion groups, developing reflective practice,
classroom observations/support, supporting beginning teachers, developing classroom management
strategies, leading professional learning programmes in the school, and facilitating and supporting professional
learning communities.

EDUCATION Holds a current New Zealand Teacher Registration

**KNOWLEDGE and **To be appointed as a specialist teacher you must:
**EXPERIENCE - Hold a permanent teaching positions at Cornerstone**
**Christian School.**
- Be a fully registered teacher, teach a full
- or part-time load,

the majority of which must be in the classroom.
- Have at least 6 years’ teaching experience (in New Zealand or

overseas).
- Have achieved the experienced classroom teacher standards,

or overseas equivalent, for at least the last 3 years.
