The Department of Botany at Otago is the only university department in New Zealand specialising in the science of plants, in fact one of only a few in Australasia. We are a research active department, and our staff teach into a wide range of degree majors, including Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Agricultural Innovation, Marine Science and Oceanography.

The University of Otago welcomes, supports, and celebrates Māori and Pasifika staff and students. The Office of Māori Development provides guardianship over Māori matters at an organisation-wide level. The University has a Māori Staff Caucus known as Te Poutama Māori, a Pacific Academic Staff Caucus, a Māori student centre known as Te Huka Mātauraka and a Pacific Islands student support centre. Each division of the University has an Associate Dean (Māori) and networks of staff supporting Māori and Pasifika students.

The Department of Botany is committed to affording students the opportunity to engage with knowledge of plants from a Māori world view, and to strengthening its curriculum and research in relation to kaupapa Māori, mātauranga Māori, commitment to Te Tiriti o Wāitangi, the University of Otago Māori Strategic Framework (MSF) and Pacific Strategic Framework (PSF).
