Applications are invited for the position of Neonatal Advanced Trainee within the Waikids Neonatal Child Health department at Waikato Hospital for the remainder of 2024, and all of 2025. This is an opportunity to be part of a progressive team based in a modern tertiary hospital.

Neonatal Services at Waikato Hospital is a 41 bed neonatal unit with 17 level 3 beds, including an isolation room, and provides a range of perinatal and neonatal services including a paediatric surgical service and emergency regional retrieval service.

This Neonatal Advanced Trainee position is suitable for advanced paediatric trainees either specialising in neonatology or general paediatrics with special interest in neonatology. It might also be suitable for a recently qualified paediatrician in their early professional career.

The Neonatal Advanced Trainee will be involved in clinical care and educational activities. Clinical duties will include after-hours duties to cover retrievals and being on the SMO on-call roster (with SMO back-up). Waikato NICU also runs a retrieval service for the region, in which the Neonatal Advanced Trainee partakes.

The role meets the RACP neonatal advanced training requirements and incorporates a research/quality improvement component. There might be an opportunity for the applicant to undertake specific skill acquisition in a subset of neonatal care, e.g. ultrasound, ventilation, research, or further tertiary study qualifications. The service is also setting up for ASUM accredited training.

It stretches from northern Coromandel to close to Mt Ruapehu in the south and from Raglan on the west coast to Waihi on the east. There are around 7000 births per year.
