We are currently looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual to join our team of Legal and Research Advisors working with the Immigration and Protection Tribunal. The Immigration and Protection Tribunal makes decisions under the Immigration Act 2009 on appeals relating to visas, deportation, and refugee or protected person status.
Your day-to-day work will be varied, and will involve collaborating closely with the judicial officers from the Immigration and Protection Tribunal to provide legal and research advice relevant to their work. You will review and summarise decisions, provide legal opinions and conduct research, including in overseas jurisdictions and on the various relevant treaties and conventions. Your wider responsibilities will involve staying up-to-date on developments in the law and relevant fields, and assisting judicial officers in completing special projects. You will have opportunities to research novel legal issues, as well as to learn from the judicial officers about the work that they do and the way they make decisions.
Our team provides legal and research services to the judicial officers of all tribunals administered by the Ministry of Justice. You will primarily be supporting the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, but there will be opportunities to collaborate on work in other jurisdictions.
Your work in this role will help deliver justice services to the public and gives you an opportunity to build strong relationships across the tribunals and the Ministry of Justice.

**To be successful in the role you will have**:
- A Bachelor of Laws degree or higher, with strong legal research capabilities (including in other jurisdictions and on international law) and an intellectually curious outlook.
- Excellent communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- An interest in learning about the issues our tribunals adjudicate on.
- Meticulous spelling, grammar and attention to detail.
- Prior legal experience with immigration or international law or refugee law would be highly advantageous.
- 1-2 years professional experience (desired).
**You will also**:
- Be committed to the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Bring an understanding of, or interest in, Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori me onā tikanga.

Utu ā-tau/Salary
**Salary Range**: The appointing salary for this role will be between $70,518 and $97,908 based on skills and experience.
