Te Whatu Ora MidCentral is advancing through a transformational change programme to firmly establish itself as a high performing health system that meets the current and future demands of its communities. A key component of the programme is the implementation of Te Wao nui a Tāne/Integrated Service Model - the vehicle by which MidCentral will implement their strategy. At maturity, the Integrated Service Model will deliver an integrated health and social system that ensures individuals, people, whānau and communities are the centre of everything we do. The transformation will provide an improved service experience and a work environment where staff feel valued and enabled to carry out their work with excellence.

Ward 21 is a 28 bedded acute adult in-patient unit that comprises of both Acute Unit and a High Needs Unit. Ward 21 provides care for those service users in the acute stage, who are in need of a period of close observation or intensive support and or intervention where this is unable to be safely provided within a community setting. Following successful awarding of government funding, a complete redesign of the in-patient unit is underway to develop and build a state of the art and purpose build inpatient unit. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the team and the service through this change.

Reporting to the Operations Lead: Acute & Specialist Mental Health & Addictions, the Charge Nurse ensures the effective allocation of resources to provide delivery of nursing and support services that facilitate efficient ward/unit/service function and management. The Charge Nurse has a key focus of improving the delivery of person and whānau centred care, role modelling quality practice and critical thinking, and supporting the development of new processes and systems relevant to the work area. The Charge Nurse has substantial theoretical knowledge, effective leadership skills and are responsible for the monitoring and management of staff performance. The Charge Nurse actively supports opportunities for education and training of all staff reports, including Integration of cultural responsiveness training, and ensures the practice is evidence-based.

Key to your success will be a proven track record in leadership roles within mental health nursing, providing vital services to the community. You will be able to demonstrate partnership working across the sector and an ability to ensure service meetings the needs of service users. You will be an experienced, dynamic and talented mental health nurse leader with a well-developed ability to think critically and reflect. You will also have excellent communication skills, including listening, group facilitation, report writing and public speaking skills.
