**PURPOSE OF THE ROLE**
As part of the Collections hub and reporting to the General Manager - Collections, the Conservation and Collection
Care Manager leads the long-term preservation of MOTAT’s collection through both advocacy and direct
management of activities which upgrade and enhance the care and condition of the collection.
The Conservation and Collection Care Manager is responsible for maintaining and improving the physical state of
the collection through policy and procedure development, preventive care strategies, and through management of
designated projects which optimise the storage and care of the collections. This position is also responsible for
contributing to Museum-wide programmes and building development projects that align with the MOTAT Collection
Policy and support MOTAT’s commitment of stewardship of the collection.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Manage MOTAT’s Conservation team, fostering collaboration and mutual support among the various teams
and functions, to achieve the strategic and operational objectives outlined in the Annual Plan.
- Ensure that the members of the Conservation and Collection Care team work collaboratively together, and
proactively across other areas of the Museum.
- Develop and communicate a MOTAT Conservation and Collection Care Plan consistent with the Museum
Collection Management Policy and keep it updated, as required.
- Develop, implement, and communicate a strategic conservation framework to include policies, procedures,
programmes, and equipment to deliver the Museum’s collection care and preservation goals.
- Lead the implementation of the MOTAT Integrated Pest Management Plan for the Museum collection,
including inspecting objects entering the museum collection for evidence of pests.
- Develop, promote and maintain a Collection Salvage Plan for the Museum collection (in alignment with the
Museum’s overall Business Continuity Plan).
- Working with the Registry team as required, develop storage plans for all collection types including storage
furniture and housing, based on preservation and conservation needs.
- Provide strategic advice to SMT and specific project teams on matters related to the care and protection of the
collections, especially long-term storage and access plans.
- Maintain awareness of international practice in Conservation and Collection Care and adherence to ICOM and
other relevant professional standards.
- Develop collection condition reviews and lead the iterative improvement of the Museum’s collection whilst in
storage and on display.
- Promote, and deliver environmental monitoring for MOTAT collections and work with the wider Collections
hub to monitor environmental controls including climate, lighting, and security.
- Work with relevant teams across MOTAT to remediate any environment issues, as required.
- Develop and implement regular and ongoing reviews to ensure the continual improvement in the care of the
MOTAT Collection whilst in storage and on display.
- Examine, evaluate and where appropriate treat collection objects either in-house or through the appointment
of external suitably qualified conservation service providers.
- Prepare and manage preparation of collection material to a suitable condition for digitisation for web-based
access and physical access for visitors and researchers.
- Assist in the preparation and installation of objects for exhibition, including recommendations for handling,
packing, and display to ensure safety of the collection objects at all times.
- Contribute to the implementation of digital technologies and practices for conservation activities.
- Identify and/or develop conservation and collection care training for the wider MOTAT Team in consultation
with People & Culture provide advice for all MOTAT Team Members in relation to conservation.
DOCUMENTATION & RESEARCH
- Develop, implement and manage a conservation documentation framework for assessments, proposals and
treatment reports; this should include full conservation assessment, conservation methodology document
formats for use by MOTAT Team Members.
- In liaison with the Registrar, expand and effectively utilise VERNON CMS to document conservation and
collection care procedures and outcomes and attach copies of all relevant documentation.
- Generate and retrieve information from databases and other sources producing written reports and surveys
for the General Manager - Collections, other sections in the Museum, or for external communication.
