Company Overview

The New Zealand Government is seeking a highly skilled policy expert to join the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as an Senior Advisor, Operational Policy. As part of NEMA's Policy Unit, this role will provide critical support in developing and implementing emergency management policies and regulations.

About the Role

This challenging and dynamic position will see you working closely with stakeholders across the emergency management sector to analyse complex issues and develop innovative solutions. Your expertise in operational policy analysis and advice will be crucial in shaping the future of New Zealand's emergency management system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality policy advice to government officials and other stakeholders on emergency management-related matters;
  • Analyse and coordinate second-opinion advice on policy work of other agencies impacting NEMA's operational roles;
  • Develop and implement policies and regulations related to emergency management; and
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to build and leverage collaborative relationships.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A proven track record of scoping and leading operational policy projects;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills to present complex ideas effectively;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to drive innovative solutions;
  • Ability to think strategically about issues using systems-thinking approaches;
  • Experience in regulatory design and development of secondary legislation; and
  • Understanding of the Crown's obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and application of Maori perspectives to policy advice.
