About the Job:The Our Future Services programme will deliver a more effective immigration system that is more productive and provides a better experience for customers and staff.

The Big Data Specialist is a technical position in the Joint Targeting and Analytics team within the Immigration Risk and Border branch of Immigration New Zealand. The team works to identify and mitigate risk early and reduce harm to the integrity of the immigration system, users, and New Zealand.
The Joint Targeting and Analytics team offers specialist expertise in data analysis to identify and target immigration risk. Services provided by the team include risk identification and targeting at the NZ border, and the provision of risk models and analytics.
The Big Data Specialist supports the team by managing and optimizing the risk analytics environment (Databricks or Snowflake), managing the raw data environment, and supporting data scientists and analysts in delivering analytical solutions to business problems and queries.
This may involve building and optimizing ETL processes, researching data access and interpretation, and providing coaching on efficient SQL query writing.
The role engages with the data warehouse team and stays up-to-date with the latest developments in big data engineering to ensure the use of the most appropriate tools and methods.
Key Skills and Qualifications:- Demonstrable experience of data warehousing, business intelligence, and analytics solutions in complex data environments.
- A strong competency in SQL programming and Python.
- Development experience within cloud environments, preferably Azure/Snowflake.
- Strong experience with developing and deploying efficient workflows at enterprise scale.
- A track record of understanding real-world business processes in enterprise data.
- A strong view on SQL development best practice, data modelling, and database design.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to develop solid working relationships.
- Solid knowledge of architectural and design techniques, industry standards, and practices.
- Good understanding of data governance principles in public sectors and application within relevant legislative frameworks.
- Process-oriented and detail-minded, with security, privacy, and ethical requirements understanding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably in software engineering or a similar discipline, and national security clearance as required.
You must be a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident visa holder.
