About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Policy Advisor to join our team in Wellington. This is a fixed-term position until 30 June 2025, working full-time (38 hours per week) in our office located at Queens Wharf.

Job Description

This role involves partnering with our manager to drive the team's work programme and contribute to the development and implementation of the team's strategy. You will lead the progress of legislation relevant to the team's work programme, provide policy advice, and lead key projects and project teams in risky, complex, ambiguous, or sensitive policy areas.

You will apply economic principles and frameworks in your advice, examining trade-offs, efficiency, and value for money. Additionally, you will take a leadership role in cross-Ministry and cross-government policy issues and negotiations, coach and mentor staff to enhance team performance and capability, and establish and develop strong relationships across other transport sector agencies and the wider government sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partnering with the manager to drive the team's work programme and contributing to the development and implementation of the team's strategy

What You'll Bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring extensive strategic policy development experience in central government organisations. You will have a deep understanding of the policy process, including machinery of government knowledge that includes the legislative process.

You will also have a reputation for delivery and meeting deadlines with demonstrated experience in a policy leadership role. Additionally, you will have exceptional written and analytical ability, a strong grasp of public policy and economic principles, and demonstrated experience working with and supporting senior decision-makers, including Ministers, to deliver outcomes.

You will have a strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels, internally and externally - gaining trust quickly and navigating difficulties swiftly. A tertiary qualification in a relevant field is required, and an understanding of land transport policy is preferred but not required.
