Companion Support Volunteers

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time
About the Kowhai Programme

The Kowhai Programme is a unique initiative at Burwood Hospital that trains volunteers to provide person-centred emotional support and practical assistance to patients in hospital.

Our programme is designed to support whanau or family members when they are unable to be with their loved ones, or for patients who do not have a support system in place.

We are seeking compassionate individuals who are willing to commit to supporting our patients on a regular basis.

What does a Kowhai Companion do?

A Kowhai Companion provides non-patient contact support to patients, excluding any personal cares. This may include engaging in conversations, playing games, or simply sitting with patients to provide emotional support.

By becoming a Kowhai Companion, you will gain an understanding of the patient's background, their whanau, identity, personal preferences, and the activities they enjoy.

This knowledge enables you to engage with patients in a meaningful way, providing them with comfort and companionship during their hospital stay.

Benefits of being a Kowhai Companion

Becoming a Kowhai Companion offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Gaining work experience which may benefit your career
  • Developing valuable skills such as empathy, communication, and problem-solving
  • Making a positive impact on the lives of patients and their whanau

Requirements

To become a Kowhai Companion, you must be willing to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months and have availability of at least 2-3 hours per week.
