About Our Team
The Disability Support Services Group works to ensure fair access to disability support services in New Zealand, prioritising those with the greatest needs. Through the DSS Review Programme, we are focused on implementing key recommendations to deliver consistent, equitable services, prioritise high-needs individuals, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of DSS, all while upholding Enabling Good Lives principles.
About the Role
This pivotal team is essential to the Enabling Good Lives approach and makes a significant positive impact on the lives of disabled people, whānau, and communities. The team is diverse and proactively aims to reflect the population we serve.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish respectful, trusting relationships with disabled people and their whānau to ensure they have a positive experience.
- Acknowledge the authority disabled people hold over their own lives and work with them to explore available resources to achieve their aspirations.
- Support disabled people and whānau to hold positive expectations and aspirations for their lives.
- Work creatively with disabled adults, children, and their whānau to plan and develop the life they want, including how opportunities in the community could be accessed.
- Identify opportunities and creative solutions to achieve life outcomes in line with the disabled person's will and preference.
What You Bring
- A deep understanding of the Enabling Good Lives principles and approach, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability.
- Experience supporting people to think creatively about their life opportunities and how to bring these opportunities into being.
- Links within the communities we serve, including Māori, Pasifika, Rainbow (LGBTI+) people, those new to New Zealand, and Deaf culture.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt your method of communicating to the situation and person.
- The ability to self-manage and work independently with a high workload in complex circumstances.
