Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki Full time
Casual Care Worker - Hillcrest Home/Hamilton

Hillcrest Home is a purpose-built, non-secure facility providing 24/7 care for young people aged 14 to 17 years old involved in the NZ Youth Justice system. Our team uses a therapeutic approach underpinned by Matauranga Māori and cognitive behavioural therapy.

We are seeking positive role models to work with our young people, helping them turn their lives around. To achieve this, our Care Workers provide daily care and support as part of a team. They assist young people to re-engage with school/vocation, attend appointments, have visits with family, connect with peers, and manage themselves within the home.

As a Casual Care Worker, you will be required to cover shifts of permanent Care Workers. This is not a 9 to 5 job - our young people require wrap-around support from us which is why our Care Workers do rostered shifts.

Typical duties include:

  • Coaching young people through structured days and life necessities
  • Participating in activities with young people
  • Supporting young people with studies, teaching life skills like cooking, art, music and cultural programmes, and mentoring them to make positive life choices
  • Establishing rapport with young people who have experienced trauma and assisting with redirecting behaviour

We value our kaimahi and the wide range of skills and experiences they have. We want to hear from you if you have:

  • The ability to build positive relationships with a wide range of people
  • Studied psychology, social sciences, social work, sports, arts or teaching and want to apply your skills to help young people in need every day
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with others and contribute to a supportive and inclusive team
  • Knowledge of Tikanga and Te Reo is an advantage
  • Willingness and ability to work across a roster that covers mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays
  • An appropriate level of physical fitness to safely support and interact with young people
  • Meet the Children's Act safety checking and vetting requirements
  • A full, clean New Zealand driver's license
