About the Role

As a key member of the Nelson City Council, you will play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable forest management practices. The council has embarked on a comprehensive transition of its commercial forests to amenity forests with continuous canopies of mixed species. This strategic shift aims to integrate conservation, water, and landscape reserves, balancing biodiversity, recreation, ecosystem health, and fiscal responsibility.

You will be responsible for leading the management of the council's 10,000-hectare estate, driving long-term strategic plans, and implementing the Right Tree Right Place Taskforce recommendations. Your expertise will focus on developing and delivering forest management strategies that prioritize biodiversity protection, risk mitigation, pest control, and fiscally responsible decision-making.

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve the council's vision for its forested lands.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including community groups and investors, to ensure inclusive decision-making processes.
  • Manage budgets and resources efficiently while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Drive cost/benefit analysis and identify opportunities for revenue growth.

About You

To succeed in this position, you should possess:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in natural sciences (forestry, soil science, agricultural science, resource management, environmental science).
  • Excellent understanding of forest transition management principles and practices, including commercial acumen and knowledge of biodiversity, climate change, and pest management.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective cost/benefit analysis, program/project development, management, delivery, and monitoring.
  • High-level communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to bring partners together.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
