Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand Xero Full time

Xero helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive through a beautiful, easy-to-use platform.

We're committed to making life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. Our purpose sits at the centre of everything we do.

About the Role:

You'll lead the way in defining engineering excellence at Xero, growing the technical capabilities of the Engineering community, and evolving the technical architecture of our software.

As a member of the technology senior leadership team, you will use your engineering expertise, understanding of Xero's business, and the Engineering organisation to drive improvement of the engineering system.

You will build strong relationships across the organisation with diverse groups, particularly the wider Engineering & Architecture community, Platform, Design, Customer Experience, Security and Agile at all levels.

This knowledge will be used to ensure your Engineering group is focused on the highest impact opportunities to improve the system of work, and is approaching them in pragmatic, safe and incrementally deliverable ways. You will act as a coach and mentor for the Principal Engineer and Lead Engineer cohorts. You will work to identify future Principal Engineers, and will take part in interviews of senior engineering talent (IC and M track). You will act as an advisor to the engineering leaders of Xero in areas such as technical concerns, architecture and engineering process.

You will role model sustainable engineering excellence, driving engineering-wide processes, visibly taking part in the engineering community and setting the bar for quality and continually improving practices. You will share your knowledge widely internally and externally via blog posts, talks and written documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Senior Principal Engineers team to shape and steer the architecture and engineering direction of Xero
  • Develop a sense of community among the Principal Engineer (PE) cohort, in partnership with the Senior Principal Engineers team
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge of the PE cohort, benefiting the broader engineering community, and aligning with the Xero Capability Framework
  • Ensure consistent execution of the PE role across Xero to boost operational efficiency and strategy attainment
  • Represent the interests of the engineering community, championing improvements in engineering practices
  • Oversight of technical decision-making processes, ensuring alignment with the engineering strategy
  • Aiming for operational excellence, striving for bulletproof operations
