We are looking for a skilled mental health professional to join our Crisis Resolution Service team at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley. The successful candidate will be working in the Wellington and Hutt Emergency Departments, conducting initial assessments for individuals aged 18 and over, evaluating mental state, risk, and urgency to inform care planning and connections to other services.

About this Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work in emergency mental health care, collaborating with triage services, the Crisis Resolution Service, and ED staff to manage high acuity cases and Mental Health Act queries. You will provide advice and consultation on mental health issues to ED staff, including senior medical personnel, and develop protocols for referrals and identify specific cases where the MH-ED RN team can assist.

The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical background in mental health or intellectual disability nursing, and experience in crisis resolution and emergency settings. They will also demonstrate an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and their application in a meaningful way in the nursing role, as well as a commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducting rapid mental health triage and initial assessments for individuals aged 18 and over
  • Evaluating mental state, risk, and urgency to inform care planning and connections to other services
  • Collaborating with triage services, the Crisis Resolution Service, and ED staff to manage high acuity cases and Mental Health Act queries
  • Providing advice and consultation on mental health issues to ED staff, including senior medical personnel
  • Developing protocols for referrals and identifying specific cases where the MH-ED RN team can assist
Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must:

  • Hold registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)
  • Have a current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and scope appropriate to place of work
  • Have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate program in mental health or intellectual disability nursing
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and their application in a meaningful way in the nursing role
  • Show a commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
