About the TeamThe International Legal Adviser will be part of a high-performing team of international lawyers advising the government on trade law issues. You will help NZ navigate some of the biggest challenges in decades to the international rules-based system. You will also support NZ exporters by enforcing our trade agreements and negotiating new trade rules.
Main Responsibilities- Providing strong analytical and strategic legal advice in support of the government's objectives for New Zealand's international relations;
- Representing NZ in international trade negotiations and dispute settlement proceedings;
- Working with a range of stakeholders to enforce our trade agreements and negotiate new trade rules.
Key Skills and Experience
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Laws including some study of international law or trade law;
- Work experience as a lawyer or legal adviser in relation to trade law, international law or commercial litigation;
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal with the confidence to connect with a range of people;
- Excellent relationship management, with the ability to work both self-directed and collaboratively;
- Understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti, Te Reo Maori and Maori customs and protocols would be beneficial.
