We are seeking an experienced professional to join our Knowledge-Water Resilience team as a Flood Risk Management Professional. This full-time, fixed-term role is based in either Masterton or Wellington and is part of the Knowledge and Insights function.

The team oversees a range of projects focused on managing flood and erosion risks, including flood hazard modelling, targeted investigations, assessments of risk management options, and strategic regional studies. We offer advice and recommendations to Greater Wellington and external stakeholders.

About the Role:

In this role, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing the delivery of investigation programmes focused on flood and erosion risk management. You will also oversee investigations related to terrestrial and freshwater biology and water quality across the region, with particular emphasis on the Lower Wairarapa Valley.

You will ensure that projects are completed to high and professional engineering and scientific standards. Your responsibilities will include work planning, budget management, project communications and reporting, and managing both an internal team and external consultants or contractors.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience, including experience related to river management
  • Familiarity with the workings of a public sector organisation and regional council responsibilities
  • A qualification and background in one or several of the following: civil/natural resources engineering, hydrology, geography, freshwater science, planning, or similar technical field associated with rivers or flood risk management
  • Project management experience in leading engineering projects (risk, scale, and financial)
  • PRINCE2 qualification preferred
  • Experience of all stages of project lifecycle management (project planning, design, consenting, construction, and handover)
  • Experience with project management, contract preparation, procurement, report writing, and administration
  • Skilled in working with/leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Skills and experience in providing quality assurance services
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, at both the professional technical level, and with the general public, including presenting technical projects at an appropriate level for the audience
  • Capability in Te ao Maori in line with Greater Wellington's Maori Capability Framework and/or the desire to learn and build your own and others' capability
