About Our Service

Overview

The Intensive Recovery Service (IRS) provides innovative and compassionate care to individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be part of a dedicated team working in outpatient and inpatient settings.

Our Teams

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service serves the lower North Island, including Wairarapa, Hutt Valley, and Capital and Coast regions. We strive to deliver exceptional care, prioritizing the needs of our patients and their whanau.

We have various service groupings within the wider Mental Health Addictions and Intellectual Disability Services, comprising approximately 240 staff from diverse clinical and administrative backgrounds. The service is led in partnership by an Operations Manager and Clinical Leader.

Service Offerings
  • Te Whare O Matairangi (Wellington Regional Hospital) and Te Whare Ahuru (Hutt Valley) offer 24-hour adult acute inpatient mental health assessment and treatment services for adults aged 18 years and above.
  • The Crisis Resolution Service (CRS) is a community mobile team providing 24-hour, 7 days a week assessment and short-term treatment services for individuals experiencing serious mental health crises.
  • Consultation-liaison psychiatry focuses on the interface between general medicine and psychiatry, offering access to assessment, treatment, and advice to Wellington and Hutt Hospital for psychological and psychiatric issues impacting a person's medical care and ability to manage their health.
About You

To succeed in this role, you will be vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand or hold an equivalent qualification, enabling you to register with MCNZ. You must be able to work comfortably and flexibly within a team environment.
