About the Role

This role will report to the Team Leader – Trade Facilitation and is based in our Wellington office.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Policy Advisor to lead our Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) work programme. You will be responsible for identifying, addressing and resolving TBT issues to international trade, ensuring efficient market access for goods and services.

The Senior Policy Advisor will collaborate with government agencies, stakeholders and international bodies to influence policy decisions and to drive trade facilitation initiatives.

Main responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing strategies to identify, address and resolve TBT issues to international trade, ensuring efficient market access for goods and services
  • Collaborating with government agencies, stakeholders and international bodies to influence policy decisions and to drive trade facilitation initiatives
  • Supporting and at times leading aspects of the team's work on Standards and Conformance issues, particularly where these influence our approach to TBT matters
  • Liaising with domestic regulators, government agencies and businesses that have an interest in TBT issues
  • Participating in TBT Committees and associated projects to implement free trade deals

You will work closely with other agencies, particularly MFAT and MPI, to help shape TBT policy and rules.

A key aspect of this role is working through ambiguity and delivering results. You will also have the opportunity to coach others to develop their policy craft and take their careers to the next level.

You will need to demonstrate strong stakeholder relationship building, influencing and engagement skills to gain the cooperation and commitment of others.

Key Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience leading complex policy projects within central government
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and application of these in public policy and in partnership with Māori
  • Wide range knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Passion for shaping policies that improve opportunities for New Zealand businesses and consumers
  • Demonstrated capability in working with Ministers, senior public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
