We are seeking a highly skilled Rural Medicine Specialist to join our team at Taumarunui Hospital, providing comprehensive medical services to patients with diverse presentations.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will work closely with colleagues to assess, manage, and provide ongoing care to patients in our emergency department and inpatient ward.

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostic interventions effectively, utilizing your expertise in emergency medicine and procedural skills.

Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in a proficient manner is essential for this role, and you will seek appropriate consultation from health professionals based at Waikato Hospital within the boundaries of your expertise.

Developing strong rapport, trust, and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and families is crucial to this position, requiring accurate information extraction and synthesis from patients, families, and other professionals.

About Our Service

Taumarunui Hospital is a vibrant and co-operative work environment where employees have opportunities to prosper and advance their careers.

We offer excellent senior medical officer support, enabling new staff to gain valuable experience in emergency procedures and develop their professional skills.

New staff members can attend up to 2 weeks fully funded medical education and take 6 weeks annual leave as required, promoting work-life balance and personal growth.

Taumarunui Hospital sees approximately 10,000 presentations annually through its emergency department and has a 10-bed inpatient ward, ensuring a dynamic and challenging work environment.

We have on-site plain film radiology and laboratory services available during the day and on call 24 hours, 7 days a week, supporting our commitment to quality patient care.

About You

To be eligible for this role, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Ideally, you should be a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, or FACEM (or overseas equivalent) with a sound ability to manage ongoing care.
